When ceramic objects are heated up to melt the glazes using gas it is possible to control the amount of oxygen in the air around the pot. Making the air low in oxygen forces the chemicals in the glazes to give up their oxygen to the surrounding atmosphere in a chemical process called reduction. Potters have long prized the subtle glaze effects given when pots are fired “in reduction”
